Spotlight | Live Performance of 2010

Musically, artistically and for the sheer beauty and mystery of the project (and despite the fact that it started in 2009) iamamiwhoami was my highlight of last year. And the evening of November 16th was the pinnacle. The "live" concert exceeded all my expectations (which very little does these days) and was stunning from start to bountiful end. The clip below is my favourite section of the performance, featuring the waltzing and swirling "n", an incredible rendition of "o" and features the beginning of the end for the Chosen One, affectionately known as "SUTS".

Starting 2011 by looking back on a few highlights from 2010. Robyn's epic "Body Talk" trilogy stands out to me as the album/s of the year. Track after track of killer hooks and heartbreak. The inclusion of acoustic versions of several tracks beautifully illustrated the beauty within the beats. What made the series even more exciting were Robyn's amazing live performances. Her set at Rimmel Room was powerfully spine-tingling. Her rendition of 2007's UK No.1 "With Every Heartbeat" at iheartradio was one of my 2 live moments of the year. (The second was an all together different affair...more info coming soon).

I have been taking a break from technology for the last couple of weeks and hence have not been recording or uploading much new music, but I though it was about time I snuck out from the trees for a few moments...The internet and social networks can be such strange and consuming beasts...I think it's becoming increasingly important to take a break now and then and experience the "real" world...Get out into nature, feel the sun and taste the rain...All things that, no matter how advanced they become, technology and apps can't recreate...

However, I do hope to get back on to YouTube very soon and upload a few new songs...In the mean time I have included my cover of Frou Frou's "Hear Me Out" (which is one of my favourite songs) that I uploaded to YT recently...

This is Part I of a song that floated down to me yesterday...Initially it was going to be an instrumental piece but the melody of what would become the chorus started to develop...I may finish the song at some point but for now it is what it is...The video again features some clips from iam which I have re-edited to try to suit the feel of the music...The lyrics explore the feeling of physical and mental exhaustion that love can lead to...You can invest your whole being into something and often feel you have very little to show for it...But, if you truly love someone, then that's ok, isn't it..?

Thought I would drop by and update this little corner of my online world...

I've been musically empty over the last week or two but am hoping there are signs that the Earthonik channels may be opening again...I have started working on two new songs (despite having about ten in an unfinished state) that I am hopeful I will be able to complete...One called "Maybe" the other "Red..."

Whether or not they see the light of day..? Who knows...They may decide they don't want to be revealed and return to from whence they came...

I really wanted to do one more video before the year ends...This one is a bit of a look back on a few levels...Firstly, this song (although a different version) was the first video I ever uploaded to YouTube back in 2007...(That video can be found under the "Old Videos" link above)...Secondly, it features the amazing animation from Madonna's "Rain" backdrop from the S&S tour which was inspired by James Jean's "Trembled Blossoms" which I used for one of my earliest originals "Broken..." Finally, it is of course a Madonna cover...She is still my first love muscially...and this song means so much to me on so many levels...Therefore, I felt it was a fitting way to say "Good-bye" t0 2009...

Well, I got the chance to finish off this song on Thursday...I actually planned to do this one a few weeks back when the music came to me...It was then going to be called "It Was Venus" for some reason...But yesterday a few lyrics floated down and the song was transformed into "If You're Breathing..." The song decided that it wanted some more percussion in it too...I am quite pleased with the result and enjoyed recording it a lot more than the curse of "This Time Around..." (I've not quite forgiven that song yet...) The song itself is about never giving up, even when you feel like you probably should and all around are telling you too...Keep on...

This is my latest original track...It's called "This Time Around" and is about dealing with life and all it throws at you...It's about learning to cope with trauma and depression and seeing a light at the end of the tunnel...Remember, if you've pulled yourself out of a dark place before, then you have the strength to do it again...

I have mixed feelings about the way this song turned out...Recording it was a nightmare..! One thing after another went wrong...Computer crashes, interruptions, self-doubts, re-records...I hovered my mouse of the "shred file" option quite a few times...However, it wouldn't let me..! I guessed that someone out there might like it, so it wasn't fair for me to send the song back to from whence it came...and hence, the song was "finished..."

"Mayfield" was the name of the cottage where my mother grew up as a child in Scotland...She still often talks about it to this day...This song is about the desire to return to those days...People had a lot less back then, yet they seemed so much happier...I think that advances in technology and the pace of modern life have taken away a large part of what made us happy in the first place...Family, freedom, friends (not just on Faceboook..!) and the feeling of being carefree...The song also deals with the idea that your true home (where your heart is) will always be with you inside...Despite the fact that those days may be a memory, you yourself keep them alive, so in a sense, your home is always with you...

I was hoping to record a new original this weekend, but the channels were cloudy...Instead I recorded a cover of one of my favourite tracks, Robyn & Kleerup's UK No.1 "With Every Heartbeat..." I think the melody and lyrics of this song are beautiful yet painful at the same time...Half way through recording it, I scrapped half of the instruments and gave it a much more stripped down feel...I also experimented with new backing vocals and harmonies...It's not perfect, but I enjoyed making it...Hope you all have a great week...

Today saw the UK release of Madonna's ultimate greatest hits collection, "Celebration..." I have been under Madonna's spell for a long time and remember the first time I fell under...It was whilst listening to "Live To Tell..." That song is among many that mean so much to me...Although the press get distracted by the controversy and circus that seem to overshadow Madonna's career, for me it has always been about the music...The first time I ever listened to "Like A Prayer" was a feeling that I will never forget...A rare moment of pure musical joy...So, this album is very special for me and I thank Madonna for making me think about life, love, music and helping me to express myself...

UPDATE: The album entered the charts at No.1...It is Madonna's 11th UK No.1 album, which equals Elvis...

This is the latest in my "Retired From YouTube" series...! I removed these three quite a while back...The first is an original dance track featuring Bjork in the video...Called "Elemental"...

The next video continues the Bjorky theme...I combined an excerpt from an ambient Madonna megamix with clips from Bjorks incredible "All Is Full Of Love" video...This was removed over a year ago and doesn't feature any of my music, but I always quite liked the result...I called it "Awakening"...

And the final video in this post is...erm, I've forgotten...let me check...OK, found it...I created an atmospheric piece of music and combined it with another of my favourite videos...Tori Amos' "Strange Little Girl"...Again, I quite liked the outcome...This one is called "Strange"...
